Our story

CAL + HAN = CALHANS

Callie and Han Nguyen–Stowe are the people behind CALHANS Outdoor Studio. The name is exactly what it looks like — our two names, stuck together — and the business grew out of something just as simple: a shared appreciation for home, for plants, and for outdoor spaces that actually feel like yours.

But the bigger idea came from noticing how unnecessarily hard landscape planning can be for homeowners. You can find thousands of beautiful plants online in about thirty seconds. The harder question is the one nobody answers for you:

“What will actually work in my yard?”

That’s the question CALHANS Outdoor Studio is being built to answer. We’re bringing together your property information, real plant intelligence, practical landscape planning and thoughtful design so you can understand what you’re working with, discover plants suited to your actual conditions, plan how they fit together, and end up with a space you can realistically build, enjoy and keep alive.

Think of it less like a botanical textbook and more like having a knowledgeable landscape-design friend sitting down with you to work through your yard.

The People Behind CALHANS

Callie Nguyen-Stowe, founder of CALHANS Outdoor Studio, writing in a garden notebook

Callie Nguyen-Stowe

Founder | Landscape, Design & Operations

Callie brings 20 years of experience in the pool and landscape construction industry, spanning both residential and commercial projects.

Her broader background includes construction operations, project management, procurement, quality control, scope development, plan and blueprint review, vendor and subcontractor management, budgeting, scheduling, field operations, process development and multi-state operational leadership.

She has spent two decades taking projects from plans and ideas through practical execution — which means she understands the difference between something that looks good on paper and something that can actually be built, maintained and lived with.

Callie also has a longstanding personal interest in plants, landscaping, architecture, interior design and creating beautiful spaces. Moving from the desert of Tucson, Arizona, to the wooded lake country of East Texas handed her an entirely different landscape challenge: different soil, different rainfall, different growing seasons, different plant material, different wildlife — and a lot of deer.

That experience reinforced a principle that’s central to CALHANS: choosing plants shouldn’t start and end with “what looks pretty?” It also has to ask, “what will actually work here?”

“A great landscape shouldn’t just photograph beautifully when it’s installed. It should make sense for the property, the budget, and the people who have to live with it.”

Han Nguyen-Stowe

Co-Founder | Operations & Quality

Han brings a practical, systems-oriented perspective to CALHANS. Her professional background spans manufacturing, operations, production management, quality systems, process improvement, customer relations, purchasing and vendor coordination, standard operating procedure development and team leadership.

She owned and operated a custom sign and graphics business, where she managed estimating, scheduling, production, installation, purchasing, vendor relationships, financial performance, employees and customer projects — all at once, most days.

Earlier in her career, Han worked in a high-volume manufacturing environment supporting quality systems and workforce development, including internal auditing, procedure development, employee training and process improvement.

Her approach to any project is the same practical question: once there’s a good idea, how do we make it work consistently, clearly and well? At CALHANS, that operational and quality mindset is the counterbalance to Callie’s landscape, construction and design instincts.

“Together, the goal isn’t simply to build something beautiful. It’s to build something homeowners can actually use.”

Why CALHANS

Two names, one way of working

CALHANS combines our names, but it also represents the way we approach this business together: creative ideas and practical execution, beauty and function, plant inspiration and property reality, design and maintainability, technology and a human, approachable experience.

We want landscape planning to feel more personal, more understandable and genuinely useful — from the first question you ask about your yard to the plants that eventually grow there.
